What is Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy?
by Melissa Tijerino
Hypnotherapy - Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process that helps you gain insight and perspective into intrusive thought patterns, complex emotions, subconscious belief systems, repressed/suppressed emotional and behavioral patterns that will ultimately lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle
Hypnosis - The induction of a state of consciousness in which a person enters a relaxed, suggestible state. Hypnosis is a trance state. Similar to the feeling of being very engrossed in a movie, book, play, or performance.

Let’s Talk About the Benefits
Hypnosis can help a person change certain behaviors, such as stopping smoking or nail-biting. It can also change perceptions and sensations, which can be particularly useful in treating pain. Here are a few more facts about Hypnosis:
Hypnosis is considered an altered state of consciousness that allows the rational mind to be more accessible
Allows for more heightened state of concentration that will assist with focusing on specific topics
Is a very relaxed state to be in and helps to create a calm and comforting environment to engage in therapeutic work
You are fully aware of what you are saying, where you are, and you will remember everything about the session
You are NOT unconscious in hypnosis, you are working with the subconscious mind
Hypnotherapy, an easy way to think about it is Hypnosis + Psychotherapy = Hypnotherapy
Some other benefits include:
Extinguish the intensity of anxiety, panic or fear
Develop emotional identification skills and learn to regulate the nervous system and emotional brain
Desensitize emotions associated with trauma
Dig deeper into the root cause of the distress or get to the source of the issue
Develop new healthy belief systems and affirmations that reinforce new healthy behaviors
How you Prepare
You don’t need any special preparation to undergo hypnosis. But it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothes to help you relax. Also, make sure you are well rested so that you don't accidentally fall asleep during the session. Make sure you aren’t hungry or thirsty, remove all sources of distraction, including your cell phone.
Some lesions from practicing mindfulness may help, stay in the moment allowing your thoughts to pass by without holding onto them. Observe your own mind without making judgements about what you’re thinking. The longer you can do this, the easier you will find it to keep a calm and relaxed state.
What to Expect
Your therapist will explain the process of hypnosis and review your personal treatment plan, your therapist should speak in a gentile, soothing tone and describe images that create a sense of relaxation and security
Generally, when you’re in a receptive state, your therapist will suggest ways for you to achieve your goals, such as reducing pain or eliminating cravings to smoke. The therapist may also help you visualize vivid, meaningful mental images of yourself accomplishing your goals. The client is fully in control of the process and your therapist is there to guide you along your journey.
Once the session is complete, you are able to bring yourself out of the hypnosis or your therapist can help you end your state of relaxation.
Results

Hypnosis can be used to help you gain control over undesired behaviors or to help you cope better with anxiety or pain.
It’s important to know that although you’re more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you don’t lose control over your behavior
You may feel drowsy immediately afterwards and most people sleep afterwards. Some who aren’t used to being relaxed, may associate the new, especially when feeling relaxed with lightheadedness
Hypnosis can be an effective method for coping with stress and anxiety, and because hypnosis addresses the subconscious instead of just the conscious - it may be more effective!
